Selling Snacks at School? Make Sure They Meet Federal Nutrition Guidelines

07.08.2025

All schools participating in the National School Lunch Program  and/or School Breakfast Program must ensure that all foods sold campus-wide during the school day comply with Smart Snacks nutrition standards, as required by federal guidelines.

  • Nutrition Standards Apply to All Foods Sold:
    – All items must meet limits on calories, fats, sodium, and added sugars
    – Applies to food sold to students from midnight until 30 minutes after the school day ends
  • To Qualify, a Snack or Entrée Must:
    – Be a grain product with at least 50% whole grains by weight, or have a whole grain listed first
    – Have a fruit, vegetable, dairy product, or protein food listed as the first ingredient
    – Be a combination food that includes at least ¼ cup of fruit and/or vegetables
    – Meet specific nutrient limits for calories, sodium, fat, and sugars
  • There Is Room to Get Creative:
    – With thoughtful planning, many snacks and products can meet the standards
    – Use tools and resources to help determine if an item qualifies
